We had a fabulous time at Diamond Del today!  Students were able to mine for rocks and minerals and keep what they found!  Please hang onto them...we will be using them very soon in science!

Next week, our school will be collecting canned goods and nonperishable items to donate to local food banks. This is in connection with Spring Valley High School's Winter Days Service Learning Project.  In addition, we will participate in spirit week to help add excitement!

Each day, if a person brings in at least one food item, he or she can dress in that day's theme!

Marvel Monday:  Wear a superhero tshirt or cape!
Top Hat Tuesday:  Wear a hat!
Wacky Tacky Wednesday:  Dress in a tacky way!
Throwback Thursday:  Dress from a past decade!
Freaky Hair Friday:  Do something crazy to your hair!

We hope to collect a lot of items to help the less fortunate. The class that collects the most items will get to participate in a mannequin challenge at recess. We will film the winning class and share the video on the morning show and blog!

Spotlight on Learning
Week of November 14, 2016

  • ELA:  This week we learned more about text features that help us understand what we are reading. Some of these include bold print, bullets, headings, and charts.  We also published our first full personal narrative about what we like about fall.  They have turned out great!  For this piece, we worked on organizing our thoughts, using transition words, and using vivid words.  We even used a thesaurus!
  • Math:  We reviewed Module 2 which included time, rounding, adding, and subtracting.  We also began timed tests (not in grade book) to help us memorize our facts! We are working through this at your child's pace. Therefore, students could be working on different times tables.  Our goal is to memorize through the 12s tables. Currently, students are using both games and auto-scored quizzes on www.multiplication.com to help them in a fun way.  Flashcards are another great way to review.
  • Social Studies:  We wrapped up our explorer unit. We have learned about Hernando De Soto, Jean Ribault, Juan Pardo, William Hilton, and Dr. Henry Woodward.   We worked on an in-class project to review these explorers.  Ask your child about their paper slide shows!
  • Science:  We learned about estuaries, salt marshes, rivers, and streams.
