Students return January 3, 2017.

ELA:  We will be working with nonfiction text dependent analysis.  We will also review narrative writing elements.

Math:  We will wrap up Module 3.

Science:  We will begin our rocks and minerals unit.  We will learn about fossils.  *If you have signed up to bring science supplies in, please send them when we return. Thank you!*

Social Studies:  We will continue to learn more about the early settlers of South Carolina.

ELA:  We worked more with theme this week. We even made our very own theme billboards.

Math:  We continued working with multiplication and division.  We are incorporating use of variables in our number sentences. 

Social Studies:  We learned about different groups of settlers and their roles in making South Carolina a success. We also learned about the royal government of South Carolina. 

Science:  We wrapped up our unit on deserts and tundras.

Week of December 12

  • ELA-  We will continue to work with story elements to include theme, character, setting, mood, tone, conflict, and resolution.
  • Math-  We will continue to work with algebraic concepts to include working to find the unknown and working with order of operations.  
  • Social Studies-  We will look further into colonial times.
  • Science- We will review and test on deserts and tundras. The test will be on Thursday, December 15.

  • ELA-  This week, we read A Castle on Viola Street and learned about theme.  Theme is the message, or moral, of a story.  Theme can also be found in poems, songs, plays, and movies.
  • Math-  We continued to work with multiplication and divison. We also learned how to solve equations that have variables. Students also began to write their own equations.  We also learned how to solve problems with parentheses.
  • Social Studies-  We learned more about the settlers of Carolina and how they contributed to Carolina's success.
  • Science-  We wrapped up learning about deserts and tundras. We will have a test on this material on Thursday, December 15.

Looking Ahead Week of December 5

Math:  We will continue working with multiplication and division, adding in the order of operations.  We will have a quiz using the facts of 6s through 9s tables on Wednesday.  This quiz will not be timed.

ELA:  We will wrap up our text dependent analysis unit and begin reading Castle on Viola Street.  We will be working with the skill of theme.  This is in our reading book.  We will also continue to work on our animal narratives. The test on this story will be on Friday.

Science:  We will learn all about deserts and tundras.

Social Studies:  We will continue learning about early settlement of Carolina.

Spotlight on Learning Week of November 28, 2016

ELA: This week, we working with narrative writing skills. Students are developing their own stories about an animal. They are choosing it's problem, how it will be solved, and from what point of view the reader will be exposed to.  I can't wait to read them!  We have also been working with text dependent analysis (TDA).  We read about why polar bears don't eat penguins and analyzed the passage's vocabulary, structure, and voice.

Math:  We have been working with strategies to memorize multiplication facts as well as writing problems with variables.

Social Studies:  We began learning about the settlement of Carolina.  We learned how the Lords Proprietors encouraged settlement of the area, especially around Charles Town.

Science:  We wrapped up our learning about wetland habitats and we have begun to talk about deserts.  We also had a visit from Diamond Del, getting us excited about our upcoming rocks and minerals unit!
