Looking Ahead Week of January 30

Looking Ahead Week of January 30

ELA:  We will continue to work on our autobiographies.  We will also continue working with identifying figurative language.  

Math:  We will have a test on area on Tuesday, January 31.  We will begin learning about fractions.

Science:  We will begin learning about soil.

Social Studies:  We will learn more about the causes of the American Revolution.

ELA:  We began to plan for our autobiography writing.  Students have brainstormed events that they would like to include in their writing and have made a timeline graphic organizer to help them with sequencing. We also have been working on identifying figurative language.

Math:  We wrapped up our unit about area.  Students are able to find area by counting squares or by using multiplication.

Science:  We wrapped up our rocks and minerals unit.

Social Studies:  We learned about reasons why colonists became upset with England's rule.

ELA: We will begin working on writing an autobiography.  We will also work with figurative language.
Math:  We will continue working with area.
Science:  We will review what we have learned about rocks.  We will have a quiz on Friday, January 27.
Social Studies:  We will test Colonial Times on Monday.  Then, we will begin learning about the American Revolution.

ELA:  We learned more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We learned about his early life and also listened to a portion of his "I Have a Dream" speech.  We also began reading Author: A True Story in our reading book.
Math:  We continued learning about area of rectangles.
Science:  We continued learning about types of rocks.
Social Studies:  We reviewed for our Colonial Times test. This test will be on Monday, January 23.

ELA:  We will begin working on autobiographies.  We will also take a look at figurative language such as personification, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and more.  

Math:  We will continue with area.  Students will have a quiz on lessons 1-4 on Wednesday.

Science:  We will continue learning about types of rocks.

Math:  We began Module 4.  This module is primarily about area.  
ELA:  We worked more with text dependent analysis.  We read about two interesting plants and their adaptations:  the skunk cabbage and the dead horse arum lily.
Science:  We learned about classifying rocks by properties such as luster, hardness, streak, and color. We also began learning about types of rocks.  Ask your child about the igneous and sedimentary rocks that we made...and ate!  We also enjoyed a visit from Fossil Frank.
Social Studies:  We continued learning about colonial times, specifically Native American roles in settlement of Carolina.

It's Goal Setting Time!

This week, we worked on setting goals with each student.  Specifically, we discussed ways to move to the next level in reading and math.  Student goal sheets will go home on Friday, January 13. Please sign and return on Tuesday.  We are excited to help your child reach his or her personal goals!

Fossil Frank



Today we had a visit from Fossil Frank. We had the opportunity to learn more about fossils.  We even had the chance to "dig" for fossils and find some really cool things!  Please ask your child to show your his or her bag tonight.  We had a great time!

ELA:  We will continue working with our article about skunk cabbage to practice text dependent analysis strategies.  This article can be found in the reading section of each student's binder.  We will have a comprehension/vocabulary test on Thursday.  Use the following link to practice vocabulary words through Quizlet.  Skunk Cabbage Vocabulary
Math:  We will test Module 3 on Monday.  Students have a study buddy in their binder to help you study.  Next, we will learn about area.
Social Studies:  We will learn about the conflicts between early settlers and Native Americans.
Science:  We will learn more about properties of rocks and minerals.  We will also learn about fossils.

ELA:  This week we read about skunk cabbage, a unique flower with interesting adaptations.  We are using this article to work on our nonfiction reading strategies as well as our responses to what we read (text dependent analysis).
Math:  We continued working with multiplication and division as well as patterns within these operations.
Social Studies:  We reviewed the various groups of colonists that came to Carolina.
Science:  We began our unit about rocks and minerals.

Cookie Mining

Today, our class began a unit on rocks. Students learned that rocks are made of one or more minerals.  Minerals (and thus rocks) are formed in nature, are solid, and have never been alive.  They even pretended to be rock miners using a cookie as a rock. They had a lot of fun mining for the minerals 
(M & Ms, chips, etc)!

  • Please send your rocks from our Diamond Del experience, if your child can find them.
  • Students will have a quiz in social studies on Friday. This quiz, about SC Colonists, is about material we learned before break.  Today, we looked through our notes and reviewed a study buddy. Please use this study stack link for practice: SC Colonists Study Stack
  • Students will have a Module 3 Math Test on Monday. Students were given a study buddy for homework today. This will help you in your preparation for review.  
  • If you signed up to send in rock unit supplies, please send them this week. We are looking forward to using these supplies with some fun experiments this week!
