Social Studies: We began learning about heroes and battles of the American Revolution. Our anticipated test date for this unit will be March 9.

Hello, Kansas!
What's a fun way to practice your geography skills? Mystery Hangouts are a great way to reach out to others and to learn more about geography. Today, our class participated in a Mystery Hangout. Our class met another group of 3rd graders. After introductions, our classes took turns asking questions that would help us narrow down where the other class was. Both classes came up with great questions such as "Are you on the east coast?" and "Are you west of the Mississippi River"?
We figured out after looking at maps and listening to clues that this class was from Kansas! Afterwards, each class shared facts about their state (great review of what we learned earlier in the year).
We had a lot of fun, and were able to review some terminology that helps in social studies!

ELA- We continued working on our autobiographies and are almost all ready to publish. We also participated in a District Writing Assessment. This assessment allows us to see how well students can respond to text, either fiction or nonfiction. Students were given two passages to read independently, and were then asked to analyze the text using a writing prompt. We have been practicing these types of writing prompts since the first nine weeks and will continue to practice throughout the remainder of the year. It is amazing how much they are growing as readers and writers!
Math- We continued learning about fractions.
Science- We learned about landforms and water features seen on Earth.
Social Studies- We wrappped up our learning about the causes of the American Revolution. We will have a quiz on this on February 21.

Making Connections
Have you heard? Our class has met some wonderful students at Round Top Elementary School via Google Hangout. Yesterday, students at both schools made a new friend, talked about common interests, and planned to meet later for book talks. They had a great time! They are even planning to keep in touch by writing friendly letters! What a fun way to connect and share what we are learning!
