Thinking Ahead Week of January 7

Looking Ahead
Week of January 7

ELA:  We will continue working with narrative elements such as character, setting, problem/solution, plot, and theme.  We will also work on narrative writing pieces.

Math:  We will continue with Module 3- multiplication and division applications.  This is a great time to brush up on those multiplication skills!  **Work in this module is considerably easier if multiplication facts are memorized.  Of course, students may still draw pictures or use count-bys.**

Science:  We will wrap up our learning about rocks and minerals.

Social Studies:  We will wrap up our learning about Carolina: A New Colony.

Pajama Day and Read In on Thursday

We will be celebrating reading at LCEU on Thursday with an author visit and read-in!  We will also celebrate with our PTO winter celebration!  Students may wear pajamas, bring their cozy blankets, and bring their books to read!  It's going to be a great day at the lake!


Week Ahead December 17-21

ELA:  We will be working on writing a narrative fiction piece.  We're going to put our knowledge of story elements to work!

Science:  We will be learning about the types of rocks:  igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.

Social Studies:  We will continue to learn about Carolina's early settlement.  We will have a quiz on the New Colonists on Wednesday.

Math:  We are working on Module 3. This module revisits multiplication and division in a more abstract way through algebraic concepts. This is a great time to work on multiplication tables 4s-9s.

ELA: We will learn more about narrative elements and begin to use these to help analyze text.  We will have a test on the reading story, Wolf! on Friday, December 14.

Math:  We will review Module 2. We will have a test on Thursday, December 13.

Social Studies:  We will continue learning about early Carolina settlers.

Science:  We will learn more about rock properties as well as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

**The last day to collect cans is Monday, December 10.**

ELA:   We will begin thinking about enhancing our writing with vivid details and effective beginnings and endings. We will have a test on Dear Juno on Tuesday.

Math:  We will continue with adding, subtracting, and estimation.  We will have a quiz on lessons 14-16 on Monday.

Science:  We will wrap up our learning about water habitats.  We will begin learning about rocks and minerals.  We will have a quiz on water habitats on Thursday.

Social Studies:  We will continue learning about the early colonization of Carolina.

Please check with your child to see if their headphones and/or earbuds are working properly.  Many of the applications and programs use sound. Many students are reporting wear and tear with theirs.

ELA:  We will turn our focus back to fiction.  We will work with using context clues to help determine meaning as well as purposefully make connections with what we read.

Science:  We will continue learning about water habitats.

Social Studies:  We will begin learning about the permanent settlement of Carolina.

Math:  We will continue with rounding numbers and estimating sums and differences. We will have a quiz on lessons 12-14 on Friday, November 30.

ELA:  We will continue to work with nonfiction reading strategies.  We will also continue working with prefixes to help us with context clues, deciphering new word sounds, and overall comprehension.  We will also continue working with a new strategy to help us with answering questions in any subject.  This strategy is restating the question.

Math:  We will be working with rounding strategies.

Science:  We will begin learning about water habitats.

Social Studies:   We will wrap up our learning about early explorers.

ELA:  We will continue working with nonfiction comprehension strategies.  Ask your child about Big Universe and Readworks next week.  We will be using various resources to read "just right" articles to aide in comprehension.

Math:  We will continue working with estimation and rounding. We will have a quiz on lessons 9-11 on Thursday.

Science:  We will continue learning about hot and cold deserts.  Students will have a quiz on these on Friday.

Social Studies:  We will continue learning about early explorers and their motivations for visiting the New World.
