Looking Ahead 

Week of August 26

Math: We will begin Module 1.  We will be learning about equal groups in multiplication, we will be relating multiplication to the array model, and interpreting the meaning of factors as the size of the group or the number of groups.

ELA:  In writing,we will be trying a variety of creative writing topics.  In reading, we will use the story, Amazing Grace, to learn more about character traits and motives as well as cause and effect.  We will be reviewing nouns, verbs, and adjectives as well.  Lastly, we will begin learning procedures and expectations for independent reading in our classroom.

Science:  We will begin learning about plant and animal adaptations, particularly in the grassland habitat.

Social Studies:  We will begin the year with learning about our location in the world, oceans, continents, and directions on a compass.

ELA: We will continue with The Lemonade War. We are using book club time and class discussion to dig deeper in to the book.

Math:  We will continue to polish our skills with geometry and graphing.

Science:  We will work with heat and magnetism.

Social Studies:  We will learn more about the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement.

Week of May 20

ELA: We will begin book clubs, with The Lemonade War as our main selection.  Students will be working independently as well as collaboratively to read and analyze the text.

Math:  SC Ready Math is on Tuesday!

Science:  We will be learning about heat sources and their effects on matter.

Social Studies:  We will be learning about the WWI, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights Movement.

ELA:  We will continue to review grammar usage as well as text dependent analysis.  We will also practice summarizing nonfiction text. We will have a test on Tales of the Trickster from our reading book on Thursday.

Math:  We will be wrapping up our unit on fractions.  We will also be polishing our skills on geometry and graphing.  Our test on fractions will be Friday.

Social Studies:  We will continue discussing the effects of the Civil War.

Science:  We will continue our study of matter.

Week of April 29

ELA:  This week we will continue working with text dependent analysis. We will also begin reviewing what we have learned so far with grammar and usage.  We will have a quiz on Stinky Signs of Spring on Wednesday.

Math:  We will continue learning about fractions, changing our focus to labeling fractions on a number line.  We will also learn about graphing as well (pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots).

Social Studies:  We will begin discussing how life was like after the Civil War.

Science:  We will be learning how to distinguish solids, liquids, and gases from each other.
