Spotlight on Learning
Week of October 31
ELA:  This week we have worked to analyze nonfiction text.  Specifically, we have learned about main ideas and details as well as how to draw out text dependent vocabulary.  We have been using Tween Tribune Jr. as a resource for articles. They have really enjoyed learning current events through this site.  We have also been working through writing our first personal narrative. We should be ready to publish next week. Lastly, students learned about various writing strokes associated with cursive writing.

We also began a new story in our reading book, Boom Town.  We will have a test on this story next Thursday, November 10.

Math:  We learned about rounding to the nearest 10 and hundred as well as adding and subtracting larger numbers.

Social Studies:  We began our explorers unit.  We discussed motives for exploration as well as benefits.  We learned about Hernando DeSoto and Jean Ribault.  Ask your child about these men's motives and results!

Oceans:  We began learning about ocean habitats.
