Spotlight on Learning
Week of August 29

Math:  We explored the connection between multiplication and division.  We learned two very important properties of math that will stay relevant for years to come.

Commutative Property:  If you switch the order of the factors in a multiplication problem, you will get the same product.
5x6=30 and 6x5=30

Distributive Property:  Numbers can be redistributed to make problems easier to solve.  For example, if I have an array that shows 2x12, I can split it into 2 arrays, 2x6 and 2x6.  If I add those two together, I will get 24. This is helpful for students when the factors and products get bigger and they haven't memorized all facts yet.

ELA:  We learned about determining character traits based on text evidence such as actions, language, and author description. We also began looking at story elements such as setting, characters, problem, and solution.

Social Studies:  We learned that South Carolina has symbols to help others understand more about our state.

Science: We learned about animal adaptations and characteristics of grasslands.
